Introduction from the chairman
The Guernsey Sports Commission opened business as a company on the 9 February 2004. It was conceived following the review of the Machinery of Government which in itself prompted a rethink of how sports development should be provided and funded in the island. This work had been previously undertaken by the States of Guernsey Recreation Committee. As a consequence the formation of a new non-political body with some public funding was recommended.
Once established the new Commission formed a close relationship with the Culture and Leisure Department. The Commission is now in a unique position to bring together both public and private funding for sport.
Its independence ensures a strong and powerful “Voice for Sport” co-ordinating and representing the wide range of sporting interests and sporting organisations.
The Commission is not only well placed to encourage new sources of finance to support sport and its development in the island but also to encourage, support and develop new sporting initiatives within the community with the particular objective of encouraging increased participation in sport and recreation amongst Islanders.
The Commission’s desired objective is to make sure that sport is available to all with the added beneficial consequence of it improving the health, well-being and involvement of Islanders.
A community also benefits from the reflected glory and the justifiable Island pride that is generated through the success on a national stage of one of its own. The Commission recognises those that have excelled in their chosen sport and brought credit on the Island.
I hope that the Commission can continue to count on your support.
Stuart Falla
