Welcome to the Guernsey Sports Commission

Introduction from the chairman

The Guernsey Sports Commission opened for business as a company limited by guarantee on the 9 February 2004. It was conceived following the review of the Machinery of Government which in itself prompted a rethink of how sports development was provided and funded. This had previously been undertaken by the Recreation Committee, a Government based body. The Guernsey Sports Commission reports to the Ministry for Culture and Leisure under the new governmental structure but is not in itself a government body.

The Commission therefore is in a unique position to bring together both public and private funding for sport in the Island together with co-ordinated representation of all sporting organisations. It ensures therefore an independent and powerful “Voice for Sport” representing a wide range of sporting interests and organisations.

The Commission is not only well placed to encourage new sources of finance to support sport and its development in the island but also to encourage, support and develop new sporting initiatives within the community with the particular objective of encouraging increased participation in sport amongst Islanders. The Commission’s desired objective is to make sure that sport is available for all with the added beneficial consequence of it improving the health and well-being of Islanders and fostering Island pride and excellence in sport. I do hope that the Commission can continue to count on your support.
