Membership Requirements

If your club or sport would like to become members of the Guernsey Sports Commission you will need to consider the following questions:
- Is our sport recognised by Sport England as being a sport? A benchmark had to be set as to what constitutes a sport and the guidelines set by Sport England have been adopted. More information can be found at the Sport England website which is www.sportengland.org.
- Is our sport already represented by a local governing body? For example La Grande Mare Golf Club need not apply for membership of the Sports Commission because all golf clubs membership is covered by the Guernsey Golf Union.
- Has our sport been running for two years and does it have a constitution? The reason for insisting on this is to ensure that the likelihood of the association folding will be minimised. Poorly run organisations have a 90% chance of folding in the first two years. A copy of the sports constitution must be submitted to the Sports Commission.
- Does our sport have a Child Protection Policy? Nearly all (there are only one or two now that do not) National Governing Bodies of sport have a Child Protection Policy. These policies are suitable to be adopted at local level although a thorough understanding of the policy is essential. It is advisable but not compulsory for the sport to appoint a Child Protection Officer. A copy of the policy must be submitted to the Sports Commission
- Does our sport have a Drug Policy? Again, National Governing Bodies of sport will have their own Drug Policies and these can be adopted locally.
