Sponsorship & Donations

Sponsorship

Although the Sports Commission is funded by the States of Guernsey, joint initiatives with corporate organisations often enable the Commission to further their work in the community. Here are a few examples:

Garenne Group

"The Garenne Group has agreed to sponsor the Sporting Achievement Awards Evening commencing this year for the next two years. Whilst a lot of the work undertaken by the Sports Commission is carried out at the grass roots level of sport, it is only right that Guernsey's finest sports men and women are given the credit that they deserve for all their efforts.

This year's event took place at Beau Sejour Leisure Centre in the David Ferguson Hall before a near full capacity with Austin Healey the former Rugby Union star as the special guest.

Specsavers Youth Games 2005

Thanks to sponsorship from Specsavers Optical Group, the inaugural Specsavers Youth Games was held in May 2005, a first for the Channel Islands.

The principle aim of the Games was to promote the value of sport to the young people of the Island, and therefore the emphasis of the Games was on fun, fair play and creating a festival atmosphere.  The 2005 Games provided an opportunity for young people to take part in a large-scale event, whilst providing a positive sporting experience and encouraging them to continue to play sport.  The event encouraged the young people of the island to establish new friendships, build confidence and improve social and life skills. Specsavers hvae kindly agreed to sponsor the next Youth Games which will take place on Saturday 12th May 2007.

Guernsey Electricity Fit n’ Fun Day 2005

The Guernsey Electricity Fit n’ Fun Day, was held on Saturday 3rd September 2005. The day was aimed at encouraging the island’s women and children to choose to be more active and provided a large range of ideas and advice on how to incorporate activity into their daily lives.

In choosing to be more active, local women and children are immediately helping to create a healthy lifestyle for themselves, by decreasing the risk from numerous health problems. This includes risk from obesity, heart disease, osteoporosis, depression, anxiety and stress. As well as health benefits; positive effects of sport and exercise also include meeting new people, learning new skills, building self-esteem and confidence and increased wellbeing.

All the island’s women and children were invited to go along to Beau Sejour to try out the many activities on offer free of charge. Ranging from Boxercise to Belly Dancing and Football to Fencing, there was something for everyone and 700 of the island’s women and children took up the offer.

Fit 4 Teens

The Guernsey Sports Commission is currently working with the Guernsey Round Table and the Lions Club on the Fit 4 Teens project. These two charities join together every year for the Swimarathon event.

The Fit 4 Teens project was launched at the 2005 Swimarathon. It is aimed at the Island’s Year 10 students, who will be offered the opportunity to join, free of charge, a six week Teen Circuit course. The course will be held at Beau Sejour Centre outside school hours. Those students attending all 6 sessions will then be offered a month’s Teen Freedom membership at Beau Sejour, again paid for by the Guernsey Round Table and the Lions Club.

The aim of Fit 4 Teens is to encourage all young people to be active as part of a healthy lifestyle, and in particular, offers an alternative for those who do not enjoy team and competitive sports.

Approved Personnel Group’s Step into a Healthier Future

The Approved Personnel group’s “Step into a Healthier Future” campaign is an awareness programme aimed at the Islands’ women and girls.

Local statistics show that female participation in both sports and exercise is decreasing. In both under and over 18 age groups, 60% fewer women and girls participate than their male counterparts.

In choosing to be less active, local girls and women are putting themselves at higher risk from numerous health problems, including; obesity, heart disease, osteoporosis, depression, anxiety and stress. In addition, choosing to be inactive means missing out on the positive effects of sport and exercise such as; weight control, reduced health risks, meeting new people, reducing stress, learning a new skill and increased well-being.

The leaflet provided by Approved Personnel provides lots of information, enabling women and girls to become more active, whether that means taking up walking or joining a sports team! To download this leaflet, please click the following link.
