A briefing paper has been received from the Department for Culture and Media of UK Government requesting that the States of Guernsey consider the UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) International Convention against Doping in Sport, in order to decide whether it is appropriate for the Convention to be extended to the Island.
Following a request from UNESCO’s Director General, the UK has agreed to sign the Convention in October 2005 and therefore requires a decision from each of the Crown Dependencies as to whether they wish the UK to extend ratification of the Convention to their Island.
Guernsey has decided that they should be a part of this convention and will be included with the other Crown Dependencies who have also decided to follow suit.
The consequences of signing will not be too onerous on sport locally as in the main, the convention is aimed at athletes at the top end of the scale.
However, there will be some tests carried out locally by an anti-doping co-ordinator and it will be the role of the States of Guernsey, through one of it’s agencies, to deliver an educational programme to all local sports groups.
