Introduction

The Guernsey Sports Commission has a detailed mandate for sports development within the Island. Its responsibilities include:

  • Working with interested parties in the promotion and funding of the provision of new development officers, for the further promotion of sport and recreation for all sectors of the community.
  • Overseeing and working closely with the Sports Development Unit and the sports specific development officers.
  • Establishing a working relationship with sporting bodies, associations and sports clubs to help them better achieve their own objectives through the medium of development plans.
  • Continuing to support sport through a system of grants and awards for competitors, coaches and administrators.
  • Adopting the rules and procedures for awarding grants and awards for competitors, coaches and administrators approved by the Commission and to modify them as appropriate to meet new and changing circumstances.
  • Considering applications from sporting bodies, associations and sports clubs for grants towards the provision of equipment.
  • Establishing a set of ethical standards in relation to sporting conduct, equity of access, protection of the individual and fairness in relation to the use of artificial stimulants or other illegal practices, and to promote the integration of these standards in island sport at all levels through the development and insistence of good practice.

The four members of staff in the Sports Development Unit are:
