Guernsey Sporting Heroes - DAVID PARSONS

David suffered a horrendous accident on a fishing boat in 1978 during which, amongst other injuries, he lost his left arm, half of the index finger on his right hand, injured his right arm to such an extent that three steel plates had to be inserted, and suffered smashed bones in his left ankle which were held together for the rest of his life by a steel bolt.
He took up golf in 1982 and improved his game rapidly to become a single figure handicap golfer.
He went on to win the World One Armed Golf Championship on three occasions in 1990, 1995 and 1996. He was also a finalist on two other occasions and a semi-finalist on six further occasions.
David also won the British Open One Armed Championship in 1988, 1989 and 1990 and the Canadian Open Championship in 1991.
In January 1998 it was announced in the New Years Honours list that David was to be awarded the MBE for his achievements and for his services to disabled golf.
