World Champion

One of the very few islanders to win a world championship. That was in 1989 when she upset all the odds to beat the great Susan Devoy in the final in Holland. European champion three times, British champion three times, British Open finalist three times and British under 23 champion, Martine played a record 89 times for England, including four World championship successes. Ranked as both British and European number one she vied for top spot with fellow Sarnian Lisa Opie. Martine rose to number two in the world rankings. Left handed, tall and strong she was an elegant player who took some stopping when on song. She received the MBE from her majesty the Queen in 1990.
