Guernsey Sporting Heroes - Mathew Le Tissier

The only Guernseyman to play for England at full international level and one of the most gifted players the country has ever produced. Matt has played for England on eight occasions, including five as substitute, and made his debut when coming on for the last 24 minutes in the 1-0 victory over Denmark at Wembley on 9 March 1994. The following October he made his first start for the national team in the 1-1 draw with Romania at Wembley. A former pupil of La Mare de Carteret School, he played in Guernsey’s Star trophy victories in both 1983 and 1984. He spent all of his local playing days with Vale Rec where he scored 169 goals for club teams during the 1984/85 season. He signed as a professional for Southampton Football club in 1986.
